Portland woman given probation for pocketing dead mother's Social Security benefits for 23 yearsA Portland woman who pocketed her dead mother's Social Security benefits for 23 years must pay back the $288,812 to the federal agency. A U.S. District judge Wednesday sentenced Jacqueline R. Linstram, 67, to probation for theft of government funds, a felony. Linstram had no criminal record until now. "I'm really sorry that I put myself in this situation,'' she told the judge. Linstram's mother died Aug. 4, 1991. At the time, her mother was receiving Social Security widow's benefits. Although her mother's death was reported to the Social Security Administration, there was a discrepancy between the mother's name on the death certificate and her name on the benefits records.
