As Multnomah County sheriff faces criminal probe, citizens committee weighs curbing his powerThe Oregon Department of Justice is investigating whether Multnomah County Sheriff Dan Staton improperly gathered information on members of the county's obscure Charter Review Committee, which is weighing whether to make Staton's position appointed rather than elected. On Wednesday, that very committee took up the proposal that allegedly prompted threatening remarks from Staton. Members made little direct mention of Staton at their meeting. But the committee did hear from Commissioner Judy Shiprack, who argued that the sheriff's job shouldn't be won through a popular vote. The committee, composed of citizens appointed by state legislators, convenes every six years to review the document that outlines the county government structure.
