Kansas House panel considers barring cities from passing nutrition labeling lawsLegislation to bar local governments from requiring and regulating food nutrition labels received a hearing Wednesday in the Kansas House Commerce Committee. Under House Bill 2595, municipalities would be unable to require retail food establishments to post nutritional information, including caloric content and allergen warnings. The hearing drew an abundance of testimony both in favor and opposition. Proponents included the Kansas Department of Agriculture, Kansas Chamber, Kansas Restaurant and Hospitality Association, Kansas Feed and Grain Association and Kansas Association of Wheat Growers. “HB 2595 takes proactive steps to ensure Kansas government, whether state or local, cannot harm restaurants or food vendors with restrictions on what products they can sell,” said Eric Stafford with the Kansas Chamber.
