An update to a once-controversial law that protects memorials that include Tennessee’s Civil War heroes is set to be voted on in the House on Thursday. Some expect the first item on the chamber’s calendar to be among the more controversial topics debated on the floor. The bill, known as the Tennessee Heritage Protection Act of 2016, seeks to outline a process for someone who seeks to remove or rename a controversial memorial or monument. The issue comes less than a year after several politicians, including Gov. Bill Haslam and U.S. Sen. Bob Corker, called for the removal of a bust honoring Nathan Bedford Forrest, which is in the Capitol.
