Barge accident on Mississippi River causes petrol spill in New Orleans About 20 gallons of "residual petroleum-based product" spilled into the Mississippi River near the Crescent City Connection bridge in New Orleans early Friday (Jan. 15) after a tow vessel crashed into a barge fleet, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. Six barges from the fleet broke loose, according to the Coast Guard, which is responding to the incident. The loose barges have been secured, and there is no additional pollution risk, according to the Coast Guard. The incident occurred at 12:17 a.m. and forced the river to close from mile marker 93 to mile marker 96.5.
