CRANSTON, R.I. — Police scandals and legal disputes associated with Mayor Allan W. Fung are costing state and city taxpayers from $5 million to nearly $8 million, the city internal auditor estimates. And the cost likely will continue to rise, according to Internal Auditor Anthony C. Moretti, who submitted his analysis Thursday night to a meeting of the City Council Finance Committee at City Hall. The tabulation is an attempt to attach a dollar figure to the findings of the Rhode Island State Police in a written evaluation of the Cranston Police Department made public last year. The evaluation was provoked by Ticketgate, an episode in which Cranston police Capt. Stephen Antonucci, allegedly for personal and political motives, tried to embarrass and/or intimidate two council members by orchestrating a barrage of parking tickets in their wards.
