The University of Kentucky aims to train more physicians by partnering with schools and medical systems in the eastern and western parts of the state – hoping to ease a longstanding, severe doctor shortage that contributes to Kentucky’s dismal health. The initiative, announced Thursday, would create a satellite four-year medical education program in Bowling Green and expand an existing partnership with Morehead State University to a three-year, year-round program there. UK President Eli Capilouto said it's designed to boost the state's physician pipeline. “The Commonwealth of Kentucky has a shortage of physicians and especially primary care physicians throughout the state, but particularly in rural areas," he said. "This is an acute health care need and an economic one as well." Partners in the effort – which is slated to begin as early as 2018 – also include Western Kentucky University, St. Claire Regional Medical in Morehead, King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, and The Medical Center at Bowling Green. UK officials have signed memorandums of understanding with these partners, although some details are still being ironed out.
