Time flew this legislative session, didn’t it? Thirty days gone in a flash, yes? Not enough time to begin to fix the state’s ills, such as shoring up an economy leaking like cheap (too cheap) oil from a bullet-riddled pickup truck. But let’s not quibble over the lack of movement on jobs bills, bills to raise salaries and cut taxes for working families, a budget that invests in behavioral health and substance abuse treatment, appropriations to fund the courts and college scholarship coffers, legislation to ease the developmentally disabled waiver waiting list and implement workable pre-K programs. Let’s toast what did pass because, look, we have Real IDs! We have Uber regulation! We have Southwest Cheese Day! And it was close, but we have “You Mean I Have To Pay For Towing? Seriously?” a Senate memorial that, we should explain, requests a study of and recognizes the annoyance over having to pay towing and storage fees to retrieve a recovered stolen vehicle. That passed unanimously Thursday, the last day of the session. But seriously. Before the session began, I highlighted two bills for which I had high hopes – one that would protect survivors of sexual assault and another that would protect developmentally disabled adults.
