SANTA FE – Attorney General Hector Balderas’ office has urged a district judge not to relax the probation conditions for former Secretary of State Dianna Duran, saying Duran will benefit from a nearly once-a-week public speaking requirement. In a court filing this week, two AG’s Office attorneys also said the former secretary of state’s community service requirement – of 2,000 hours over five years – should not be reduced, as was requested by Duran. “That is not an unreasonable condition,” the attorneys wrote, while adding it’s also not unreasonable for Duran to have to find child care for the three grandchildren she takes care of. “Many probationers are similarly situated, and they are not absolved of completing community service.” Duran, a Republican who was elected secretary of state in 2010 and re-elected in 2014, resigned from office last year and pleaded guilty to illegally using campaign contributions to fuel a gambling habit.
