SD polygamist leader arrested, to appear in court in fed probe
RAPID CITY — The leader of a South Dakota congregation of Warren Jeffs' polygamous sect is making his initial court appearance after his arrest in a federal sweep accusing sect leaders of food-stamp fraud and money laundering.
The appearance in federal court in Rapid City is scheduled Wednesday.
Officials say 42-year-old Seth Jeffs was arrested in Custer County on Tuesday morning.
Prosecutors are asking for Jeffs and other group leaders to be kept behind bars pending a trial because authorities say they are a flight risk.
