Senate considers constitutional amendment for judicial redistrictingKentucky’s Supreme Court chief justice, John Minton Jr., cautioned lawmakers against opening the state’s constitution for the purpose of judicial redistricting Wednesday, but one lawmaker favored legislation doing so saying Franklin County’s courts have too much power. Sen. John Schickel’s (R-Union) Senate Bill 8 pass favorably out of committee Wednesday and if it becomes law it would require the Kentucky Supreme Court to make recommendations for judicial redistricting circuit and district courts every 10 years based on caseload and population. The bill’s provisions would also require adjustment of the Supreme Court districts based on population only. For too long, Schickel said there’s been a justice problem where some courts throughout the state don’t have an equal amount of resources compared to others.
