The head of Memphis VA Medical Center has been ousted and replaced by an acting director amid findings that the institution is plagued by "underperformance" problems, officials said Thursday. Dr. C. Diane Knight, CEO of the medical center since July 2013, is being transferred to the Veterans Integrated Service Network 9 in Nashville to serve as Primary Care Service Line Chairperson, the VA said in a brief announcement. Effective Monday, the acting director at the facility will be William "Bill" Mills, who headed the VA hospital in Altoona, Pennsylvania, which has consistently ranked as one of the top facilities in the Department of Veterans Affairs system. "As a former Tennessean, Bill brings a wealth of operational and administrative experience," John Patrick, director of the VA Midsouth Healthcare Network, said in a prepared statement. "He has the right skillset to improve our operations in Memphis and ensure veterans receive the quality and timely care they deserve."
