ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — An Albuquerque jury handed up a nearly $5.5 million judgment against FedEx Ground Package System over the death of a FedEx driver who was killed in a crash on Interstate 40 near Grants in November 2011. Martin Leon, a FedEx Ground driver, was a passenger in the FedEx semi-trailer truck when driver Federico Martinez-Leandro rear-ended another semi-trailer. The crash ejected Leon out of the semi, and he was run over by the FedEx trailer and killed, according to the lawsuit. At the time of the crash, Leon had recently finished a shift driving the vehicle and was in a sleeping area in the semi and Martinez-Leandro was driving. Leon, 48, lived in California with his wife and three children. Leon’s wife, Elia Leon, brought the lawsuit, accusing FedEx Ground of being negligent in allowing Martinez-Leandro to drive while violating numerous traffic laws.
