'I have been drinking wine,' ex-Sheriff Jiff Hingle said during DWI arrest: NOPDFormer Plaquemines Parish Sheriff Jiff Hingle was in an "extreme" state of impairment the night he was arrested with DWI, "swaying heavily" and forcing police to stop a field sobriety test for fear Hingle would fall down, his arrest report said. "I have been drinking wine," Hingle said in slurred speech when a New Orleans police officer asked him if he had been drinking early Thursday (Feb. 25), the report said. The former sheriff, who in January completed a federal prison sentence for corruption, was booked with DWI and with failing to obey a stop sign, New Orleans police has said. Hingle's attorney, Frank DeSalvo, did not immediately return a message seeking comment on the arrest report Friday. The report said Hingle, 64, was driving a silver Mercedes Benz when an officer saw him run the stop sign at Tchoupitoulas and Girod streets at 12:51 a.m. Thursday. The officer stopped Hingle and asked for his license and registration. Hingle "fumbled" for several minutes in a stack of papers and never could find his driver's license, the report said.
