The state House approved a bill Monday that seeks to prevent religious indoctrination in public schools. The bill would require local school boards to set policy on how to appropriately include religion in curriculum and class materials. It also would require teachers of core subjects in grades 6-12 to provide a class syllabus. Bill sponsor Rep. Matthew Hill, R-Jonesborough, said he filed the bill to address statewide concern about how religion is taught in public schools. In the fall, concerns arose about the portrayal of Islam and claims of Islamic indoctrination. The concern over Islam has spurred school board resolutions, town halls and requests to ban certain textbooks.
