The University of Tennessee president said on Monday he stood behind leaders at the Knoxville campus who have been accused in a federal lawsuit of contributing to a culture that enables sexual assaults by student-athletes. During an interview in Legislative Plaza, UT President Joe DiPietro said he was still confident in the leadership of Knoxville Chancellor Jimmy Cheek and officials in the school's athletics department. “At this point I have no reason to be worried or vacillate on that at all,” he said. The lawsuit, brought by eight female former students, alleges that the university administration and athletics department officials systematically enabled student-athletes to escape punishment when accused of sexual assault. DiPietro would not comment on the lawsuit directly, but he denied its central allegations, echoing earlier statements on the matter.
