PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Rhode Island court system, in a first-time comprehensive effort, has made a mass mailing to people who collectively owe $81 million in overdue fines and fees. They have 30 days to pay up or, by law, their names and town or city of residence will be published on the judiciary website, the dunning letters say. The Traffic, District and Superior Courts are owed $113.2 million related to criminal cases, but the collection effort includes only sums that have been due for more than 90 days. Exempted are defendants who are appealing a case or have arranged a payment plan. The collection campaign is the result of conversations in 2015 between Rep. Cale Keable, D-Burrillville, chairman of the Judiciary Committee in the House of Representatives, and court representatives in which Keable urged the courts to comply with a statute that provides for the collection of unpaid sums.
