PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The campaign to make life easier for Rhode Islanders who immigrated to the United States illegally is drawing push back from state lawmakers who want to get tougher on immigration. Rep. Arthur Corvese, D-North Providence, introduced a bill Thursday that would head off efforts to provide driver's licenses for immigrants and another that would make it a crime for elected leaders to restrict police from enforcing immigration laws. "These two bills will both represent the voices of those who are looking for consistency, stability and a sense of order to our present society, and engender a balance in the conversation and debate between the two dichotomous political perspectives," Corvese said in a news release. The driver's license bill would add a valid Social Security number, or proof of legal immigration status, to the list of things Rhode Island law says an applicant must provide to get a license.
