Should it matter? I think not, but inquiring minds want to know, just as they want to know the candidate's choice of pet, or what their favorite color is.

Jewishness is an ethnicity, a culture, a heritage, and many proud Jews are agnostic or atheist. I've forgotten the estimate but something like 30% of Israeli Jews do not believe in God. Does that mean they are not Jews? No; only that they are Jews that do not believe in God. You don't have to believe to celebrate Jewish festivals and Jewishness. If someone is better informed, please jump in here and correct me. (I'm not Jewish but a dilletante -- although certain ancestors were named Eisenmann, Bachman, Goldman, Goldschmidt, Gould, Gutman, sometimes with Aaron or Jacob as a first name, so this might reflect Jewish ancestry mixed in with all the Appalachian Scots-Irish; if so I am pleased .)

I am quite cool with an atheist president. In fact in a Bible class at a small fundamentalist college the professor, Dr. Jim Massey, a preacher and Koine Greek scholar, said to us he'd prefer an atheist for a president because an atheist could do necessary things that a Christian could not do. From what I've observed, there ain't much a Christian president won't do.
