(Photo: Karl Etters/Democrat)A Southern heritage group took to the front lawn of the Florida Capitol Saturday in opposition to several pieces of legislation it says would curtail the display of emblems of its cultural roots. But the actions of the League of the South, which is classified as a hate group, drew some criticism. As League members waived more than a dozen Confederate flags at passing motorists on Monroe Street, another group disputing their message set up camp across the street bearing American flags. LOS is opposing SB 154 and HB 243, filed by Democratic lawmakers Sen. Geraldine Thompson of Orlando and Rep. Darryl Rouson of St. Petersburg, and HB 141 filed by Miami Republican Rep. Jose Felix Diaz. The first bills would bar the display of Confederate flags or emblems from 1860 through 1865 on publicly owned or leased property.
