The legislature's public safety committee on Thursday reworked a controversial bill that would require those carrying a gun in public to show police their permit. The bill, approved on a vote of 16-9, would only give police the right to demand to see the permit if the gun was visible to the officer. That's a change from the initial proposal, which would have required the gun owner to show the permit to law enforcement if asked, regardless of whether the officer saw a firearm or had a reasonable suspicion that a crime occurred. Rep. Steve Dargan, D-West Haven and co-chairman of the committee, said the change was made after consulting various stakeholders, including the NRA, Sandy Hook Promise and the Connecticut Citizens Defense League.
