Republicans rebuff McAuliffe on bill granting concealed carry rights to abuse victimsRepublicans in the General Assembly voted Friday to reject an attempt by Gov. Terry McAuliffe to scale back legislation that would grant near-automatic concealed carry rights to those who take out protective orders to escape domestic violence. As passed, the bills would make protective orders serve as de facto concealed carry permits for anyone legally allowed to own a gun. Democrats have argued the bills would make already dangerous situations less safe by giving emergency gun rights to people who are not properly trained. McAuliffe proposed granting the extra gun privilege only to those who have undergone in-person safety training and applied for a formal permit. Both the House of Delegates and the Senate voted to reject the governor’s amendments, but there were not enough votes in the closely divided Senate to force the bill into law over the governor’s objections.
