Voters would be required to show some form of identification at the polls, starting in 2018, under a bill passed by both branches of the West Virginia Legislature, but still pending final approval. The state Senate passed the voter ID bill Friday, after amending it to greatly increase the types of acceptable identification that a voter could show at the polls. Alternatively, a voter without any ID could bring a friend or family member to the polls to vouch for them, or they could have a poll worker vouch for them. If it becomes law in its current form, the bill likely would be the most lenient voter ID law in the country, of the 33 states that require some form of ID. The bill (HB 4013) passed 20-14, with Sens. Corey Palumbo, D-Kanawha and Bob Plymale, D-Wayne, joining every Republican in voting yes.
