The Fiscal Policy Institute is out with a report from a unit of the University of California, Berkeley, with ties to labor, regarding the push for a $15-an-hour minimum wage. They also include endorsements by a group of economists and sociologists supporting the call for a phased-in $15/hour wage. They compare it to an expansion of the Earned Income Tax Credit — or a credit for low-wage earners which many Republicans and business leaders prefer — but contend the minimum wage would still be a more effective way to combat poverty. The release from the labor-backed FPI comes as both the Senate and Assembly have released their so-called one-house budget plans marking one of the traditional milestones to in finalizing the budget.
