Agency wants to seek privatization proposals for Kansas state hospitalThe state agency overseeing troubled Osawatomie State Hospital asked lawmakers Wednesday to approve legislation that would allow it to pursue potential privatization of the facility. Kansas Department of Aging and Disability Services Secretary Tim Keck told the Senate Ways and Means Committee that if the Legislature passes Senate Bill 460 it will seek proposals from corporations and nonprofits to run all or parts of the hospital. The comments, made during a hearing, were the clearest signal yet the agency wants to explore privatization. KDADS faces pressure to improve both Osawatomie and Larned state hospitals, which face significant staffing shortfalls and morale issues. Lawmakers have forbidden privatization of the state hospitals, and legislation would be needed to allow KDADS to explore turning over parts or all of the hospitals’ operations to a private company.
