U.S. Senate refuses to advance Sen. Pat Roberts' bill on GMO labelingThe U.S. Senate on Wednesday voted down an effort by Sen. Pat Roberts to prohibit states from requiring genetically modified food labels. The bill would have created a U.S. Department of Agriculture voluntary labeling standard for genetically modified products, referred to as bioengineered food in the legislation. “No state or a political subdivision of a state may directly or indirectly establish … or continue in effect as to any food or seed in interstate commerce any requirement relating to the labeling of whether a food … or seed is genetically engineered,” the bill stated. The legislation was a response to a 2014 Vermont law requiring labels on products containing genetically modified organisms.
