Open enrollment losses loom as two Northwest Iowa school districts prepare to combineREMSEN, Iowa | Facing declining enrollments and uncertain financial futures, the Remsen-Union and Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn school districts last year forged a whole-grade sharing agreement. This fall will be the first academic year for the combined school, called MMCRU, with the high school in Remsen and middle school in Marcus, and elementary schools in each town. But there could be considerably fewer students in the classroom than school officials originally anticipated. A total of 51 students from Remsen-Union and 20 from Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn have applied to open enroll in neighboring districts by the March 1 deadline for the 2016-17 school year, according to school officials. Twelve of the Remsen-Union students are members of the 2017 graduating class, said Jan Brandhorst, the superintendent for both districts.
