Joseph C. Mandel, renowned philanthropist and business leader, dies at 102CLEVELAND, Ohio — Joseph C. Mandel and his brothers, Morton and Jack, had a characteristic answer ready, 20 years ago, when they were asked what they'd do with the $1.8 billion they stood to make from selling Premier Industrial Corp., the company they founded in 1940. Give it away, they said. Already known for the philanthropy of their family foundations, the brothers made good on their word. Leading one of the largest nonprofits in the United States, they increased their giving and deepened their focus on gifts that transformed schools, groups and entire communities.
