Hunger striker's supporters tear down his protective structure at Kansas Statehouse upon orders from stateSupporters of hunger striker Raymond Schwab took down his tent-like structure late Monday afternoon at the top of the north steps of the Kansas Statehouse, after state officials said it violated rules that ban camping or tents on state facilities. Jennifer Winn — the spokeswoman for Schwab, who was in the 15th day of a hunger strike protesting the Kansas Department for Children and Families’ removal of his children from his home — said he would continue to protest at the top of the steps while trying to keep warm and dry using umbrellas and blankets. “He will stay here in the cold, in the rain, in the snow, which is what (Gov. Sam) Brownback wants — to try and force him to go home and shut up, but we’re not,” Winn said. “We’re not going to go home. We’re not going to shut up. These people are harming our children, and it is our duty as Americans to stand up and fight for them, and that’s exactly what we intend to do.” John Milburn, spokesman for the Kansas Department of Administration, stressed that when that department granted Schwab’s request to use the north steps of the Statehouse for 30 days beginning March 25, the department provided Schwab a copy of the rules for use of state facilities.
