Newly appointed prosecutor in Statehouse corruption probe says he’ll defer taking any action
Update(1:46 p.m.): First Circuit Solicitor David Pascoe is petitioning the state Supreme Court to intervene in his dispute with Attorney General Alan Wilson over who will serve as special prosecutor in an ongoing Statehouse corruption probe. Wilson’s office moved to fire Pascoe on Monday but the Dorchester County prosecutor and the man Wilson chose to replace him question whether the attorney general has the authority to make those moves. Wilson had formally recused himself from the case before turning it over to Pascoe. Pascoe filed a motion this morning asking the Supreme Court to step in and settle the issue.
Update: Attorney General Alan Wilson has scheduled a press conference for 3 p.m. in the Rembert Dennis office building on the Statehouse grounds. His spokeswoman, Hayley Thrift, would not say what Wilson will discuss, but he is widely expected to talk about the blowup over his firing of David Pascoe as special prosecutor in the ongoing corruption probe.
Original post: Attorney General Alan Wilson’s office moved quickly to assign a new special prosecutor for the Statehouse corruption probe, tapping a Columbia-area solicitor a day after dumping the man he’d initially chosen amid an erupting feud.
Chief Deputy Attorney General John McIntosh informed 5th Judicial Circuit Solicitor Daniel Johnson he now has full authority over the corruption probe.
The appointment comes 24 hours after Wilson’s office fired 1st Circuit Solicitor David Pascoe, accusing the Dorchester County prosecutor of abusing his power as he tried to take the case toward a state grand jury.
