Turkish leader condemns anti-Muslim rhetoric at mosque openingLANHAM, Md. — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan helped to open an Islamic center Saturday outside of Washington, D.C., and in doing so criticized “those who are defaming our faith.” U.S. presidential candidates are targeting Muslims, he said, and attacks on Muslims in America have risen in recent years. “We have been fighting terrorism in Turkey for the past 35 years, so please make sure that you observe the terrorism not only in Paris and Brussels, but also in Turkey and Pakistan,” Erdogan said to a crowd consisting largely of Turkish Americans. He said the attacks in those latter countries “cannot compare” to those in Paris and Brussels. Erdogan inaugurated the Turkish-funded Diyanet Center of America in Lanham, Md. It houses a mosque, a cultural center and an exhibition center, among other facilities.
