Bernie Sanders used a campaign stop in Madison on Wednesday to defend his sweeping agenda — including his plan to make college tuition free. Sanders, at a rally in Madison and in an interview with the Wisconsin State Journal, also emphasized his gulf with Clinton on trade deals. He predicted the outcome of Wisconsin’s primary Tuesday will hinge on whether there is robust turnout, which he said would work in his favor. Clinton, the former Secretary of State, ratcheted up her criticism of Sanders during a stop in Wisconsin this week. In Green Bay, she described Sanders as a “pie-in-the-sky” politician making promises he can’t keep. Campaigning in New York on Wednesday, she questioned his ability to “get things done.” Sanders’ candidacy rests in part on his ambitious plans to make public colleges and universities tuition-free, rebuild the nation’s infrastructure and expand Social Security and family and medical leave. He proposes to finance the plans by increasing taxes on corporations and wealthy individuals and by increasing payroll taxes on people of all income levels.
