WASHINGTON -- Iowa GOP Gov. Terry Branstad stunned observers Tuesday by saying he wanted to see Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, defeated in the Iowa GOP presidential caucuses. “I think it would be very damaging to our state,” if Cruz, who has been placing either first or second in polls in the Hawkeye state, won, Branstad told television station WHO-TV. “I believe it would be a big mistake for Iowa to support him.” Branstand, who has not endorsed anyone for president, had just spoken to the Iowa Renewable Fuels Summit in Altoona, Iowa. Cruz has been opposed to the federal mandate for renewables, including ethanol, a corn-based fuel, prompting frequent questions from voters in Iowa, a major corn-growing state. The Texan recently said that he would support the program until the Renewable Fuel Standard’s expiration in 2022.
