FREEMAN, S.D. — TransCanada estimates that about 400 barrels, equal to 16,800 gallons, of Canadian crude oil leaked from the Keystone pipeline into a field in South Dakota. The pipeline goes south through eastern South Dakota, roughly paralleling Interstate 29. A crew of about 100 is working around the clock with regulators about 4 miles from TransCanada's pump station at Freeman, company officials said in a news release. "These specialists continue to affirm the incident is being controlled and there is no significant environmental impact observed and no threat to public safety," said company spokesman Mark Cooper in a news release. Cooper said the company reported its leak estimate on Thursday to the federal National Response Center and the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Administration.
