Vestavia doctor, owner of Jasper pain clinic, sentenced to federal prisonA Vestavia Hills physician and owner of a Jasper neurology and pain clinic was sentenced Friday to two-and-a-half years in prison for dispensing narcotic painkillers without a legitimate medical reason, federal authorities announced in a joint statement. Dr. Muhammad Wasim Ali, 51, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Scott Coogler to 30 months in prison, according to the statement from U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance, Drug Enforcement Administration Assistant Special Agent in Charge Clay A. Morris and Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Sec. Stan Stabler. The sentencing was held in Tuscaloosa. Ali is to report to prison on May 10. One of Ali's attorneys declined comment after sentencing. Ali had pleaded guilty in November to 10 counts of unlawfully distributing controlled substances "outside the scope of professional practice and not for a legitimate medical purpose" to three people working undercover with law enforcement.
