Louisiana individuals and businesses would pay more taxes across the board under options Gov. John Bel Edwards proposes to close a current budget hole of $750 million and an even bigger $1.9 billion budget gap next year. "This isn't exactly the press conference I wanted to be hosting," Edwards said during a press conference in the Capitol Tuesday. "The days of budget gimmicks to limp along are over. If we do not act responsibly and quickly ... the state will face the most severe cuts it's ever seen." Among the proposals floated: an additional 1-cent state sales tax; raising tobacco tax; repealing the business utilities sales tax; and repealing the current deduction of federal income taxes paid on state income tax returns. "We've reached the end of the road," Edwards said. "We recognize their might well be other options and we welcome those conversations, but we will not stand for another round of political theater to block the changes we need."
