Donald Trump is Openly Mocking Christianity and Evangelicals are Eating It UpLook, I’m not here to doubt anyone’s faith. If someone says they follow a certain religion (or no religion at all) I take them at their word. Though the truth of the matter is, another person’s faith doesn’t matter to me. As long as they’re not trying to force their views on me, or anyone else, I couldn’t care less what someone else thinks happens to them after they die. That being said, for many Republicans religion is a big deal – especially evangelicals. These are many of the folks who equate “religious freedom” with their right to force their views on other people – which, of course, is the opposite of “religious freedom.” But it’s undeniable that no matter what any progressive might think about religion, pandering to evangelical voters is a big deal for Republican candidates. These are voters who can literally make or break a campaign. So when I heard Donald Trump was going to be speaking in front of Liberty University, I knew it was going to be a bit of a train wreck. Well, that writer is a little selective in going after Trump for speaking at Liberty U. Bernie Sanders spoke there, which was a little bit awesome. And I'm reminded of a young senator named Obama who gave a speech at an evangelical mega church in California and made a good impression telling them about combating AIDS.
True, Obama did not try to change his stripes to cater to the audience like Trump does. Obama kept his integrity rather than being anybody's hound that'd hunt with him.
Too much has been made of Trump mentioning "Two Corinthians 3:17." I've heard it called that, and one, two and three John and one and two Peter. Maybe it's not what a biblical scholar or collige-edicated preacher would say but it's no big deal.
As for pandering and schmoozing, hell, that's what politicians do. Some have crashed and burned for committing the unpardonable sin of speaking before a racist group, while I think criticism ought to depend on what they said. IMO if you are running for office you go into speakeasys and opium dens and bordellos and whereever they'll sit still for a minute and listen. You'd go campaign in prisons if they still had the right to vote. I'd have respect for a Republican who'd go speak to a union audience.
Not saying I approve of Trump or Liberty U or the Falwells. But Trump is showing real signs of being a politician, and he handled Aissa Wayne and Sarah Palin quite well. Some Huey Long in that boy!
