Anyone with a lick of “Hoosier common sense” knows you don’t call Indiana natives “Indianans.” Just ask Indiana Sens. Joe Donnelly and Dan Coats. They submitted a letter to the Government Publishing Office Tuesday asking that Indiana natives properly be referred to as “Hoosiers” in the 2016 GPO Style Manual. The current style manual refers to Hoosiers as “Indianans,” a wholly foreign term to native Hoosiers. “Although the 2008 Style Manual’s use of ‘Indianan’ may follow established style precedent for naming the natives of a state, Indiana residents do not use this word. In fact, we find it a little jarring to be referred to in this way,” the letter reads in part.
