TRENTON — Gov. Chris Christie rejected legislation Tuesday that would have required all nonprofit hospitals to pay fees for the first time to help cover the costs of police and other local services. The bill was a response to a landmark tax court ruling last year that found Morristown Medical Center operated largely as a for-profit hospital, making it subject to property taxes. The two sides settled on an agreement that will require the hospital pay the town $15.5 million over the next 10 years. The New Jersey Hospital Association collaborated on the bill (S3299), saying without a legal response to the Morristown decision, hospitals would be the target of costly and lengthy lawsuits to extract their own settlement. Betsy Ryan, the hospital association's president and CEO, said she was disappointed with the governor's decision.
