ASHEVILLE – Republican-led changes in state taxes and fees have benefited the wealthy at the expense of ordinary North Carolinians, two local Democratic legislators and a UNC Asheville student said at a news conference Friday, just ahead of the deadline to file income tax returns. The moves are "shifting the burden of revenue (to run state government) to the backs of those least able to afford it," Rep. Susan Fisher, D-Buncombe, said at the event held by liberal group Progress N.C. Action. Laws passed by the General Assembly and signed by Gov. Pat McCrory in recent years have cut personal and corporate income tax rates while broadening the list of services subject to the sales tax to include things like car repairs. The state has also raised Division of Motor Vehicles fees and acted to halt what would have been a significant drop in the state gas tax. The result is that, "North Carolina students and families are not getting a fair shake anymore," UNCA student Austin Hanna said. They've been hurt by a "shrinking commitment to public education" as well as higher costs, he said.
