Agriculture commissioner seeks federal disaster declaration for Goliath-hurt livestock producersLUBBOCK -- Sid Miller has requested a federal disaster declaration to help livestock and dairy producers recover from Winter Storm Goliath, the agriculture commissioner said Wednesday afternoon. Miller, speaking at the Texas Alliance for Water Conservation’s Water College, said he asked for the declaration from U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack. Estimates of livestock killed in the blizzard range from 35,000 to 45,000 head. Countless more dairy cows have also suffered lower production in the weeks since, after their owners were unable to milk them for up to three days. The declaration will allow impacted farmers and ranchers access to long-term, low-interest loans, Miller said.
