A smaller and more politically dedicated pool of voters is likely to settle Republican legislative primaries now that the party's presidential nomination is all but final. At one point it appeared South Dakota's June 7 primary might play a role in the party's presidential contest, but announcements this week that Ohio Gov. John Kasich and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz would end their campaigns effectively made Donald Trump the GOP's nominee. That has some predicting low turnout for state's primary. Political expert Michael Card said many South Dakota voters will likely skip going to the polls, now that the contest has essentially been called for Trump. “A lot of voters are going to say, ‘He’s the presumptive nominee, I don’t have to go,’” the University of South Dakota professor said.
