BATON ROUGE — Higher education leaders from throughout the state streamed into the Governor's Mansion here Wednesday to plead their case against cuts as Gov. John Bel Edwards tries to sort through an estimated $750 million mid-year budget deficit. Edwards summoned university and community and technical college presidents and administrators to the mansion to lay out the budget problem and ask them to lobby their lawmakers to support his budget remedies, which include new taxes, when the governor calls a Legislative Special Session Feb. 14. "We all want to convey the message that the role of higher education in the economic future of the state is critical," said Joe Rallo, Louisiana Commissioner of Higher Education. Higher education has been cut more than $700 million during the past eight years. Edwards said Tuesday some institutions would face bankruptcy with further cuts as he rolled out a menu of revenue-raising measures. Among them is an additional 1-cent state sales tax.
