Albuquerque Oversight board: Officers should be drug-tested after firing gun
Albuquerque’s Police Oversight Board said officers should be drug-tested after firing their weapons in the line of duty, but it’s unclear whether the suggestion will be put into practice. The board recommended the policy after it reviewed evidence in the case in which Albuquerque police Lt. Greg Brachle shot and seriously wounded detective Jacob Grant during a botched undercover drug sting. The board said Police Chief Gorden Eden should fire Brachle and make six policy changes. One of those changes was to start drug-testing officers after they are involved in shootings. The board also said the department should allow what are called “buy bust” operations only after full briefings, end “radio briefings,” prohibit parties who were not briefed from participating, allow police to have only legal levels of window tint and ensure that officers in undercover operations have reliable communication wires so other detectives can hear what’s going on.
