Pay raises for himself, 31 others, behind firing of State Fair CEO
State Fair Park Chief Executive Officer Rick Frenette was fired after he ignored the state approval process and gave himself and 31 other executives merit pay increases that totaled approximately $78,000, officials said Thursday.
The Discretionary Merit Compensation increases were given this year. They were not lump sums. Instead, the increases — awarded for meritorious performance — were used to build base salaries of the employees.
On Wednesday night, after a four-hour closed session meeting, the State Fair Park Board voted unanimously to terminate Frenette's employment. Frenette had led the State Fair since 2010.
Human Resources Director Ryan Burns resigned Thursday in the wake of Frenette's firing.
