BAGDAD, Ariz. — An F-16 fighter jet from Luke Air Force Base near Phoenix crashed Thursday in a remote area of northwestern Arizona and officials said there was no immediate word on the fate of the pilot. “Luke AFB officials are working closely with local authorities in a search and rescue operation,” base officials said in a statement. “Due to the remote location and rugged terrain, the status of the pilot is unknown.” The crash occurred at about 8:45 a.m. in rugged terrain near Bagdad in Yavapai County, Luke officials said. The area is sparsely populated. Bagdad is about 85 miles northwest of Luke, which is located in the Phoenix suburb of Glendale.
