As clock ticks on legislative session, lawmakers appear to reach budget dealLouisiana legislators appear to have reached a deal on the nearly $26 billion spending plan for the state budget that begins July 1. Senate President John Alario, R-Westwego, told reporters at about 5 p.m. Sunday that he’s hoping to have the budget passed this evening, but it won’t include money from House Speaker Taylor Barras’ proposal to pull $74 million from other funds to put toward hospitals and the popular Taylor Opportunity Program for Students. “Those were not surplus funds,” Alario said. “We didn’t think they could stand those cuts.” Barras, R-New Iberia, also confirmed that a deal has been reached and could be approved tonight.
