Bullock, Gianforte rally troops ahead of mostly symbolic primaryHELENA — On the eve of a primary that doesn't mean much for the governor's race, Republican candidate Greg Gianforte and Democratic incumbent Gov. Steve Bullock took jabs at each other at dueling events held on the opposite side of a downtown street. Late Monday afternoon, Gianforte met with reporters at the Montana Club, just across from where an hour later Bullock would join other Democrats in opening a field office. Gianforte brushed aside recent issues, including a 2009 lawsuit over an easement to a fishing access located near his home and accusations his campaign placed calls in which the caller mispronounced the name of the state's capital city. "Susan and I have always welcomed people onto our property," Gianforte said, and added that his running mate Lesley Robinson's family has 10,000 acres of their ranch in block management. Last month Gianforte was criticized by Democrats over a lawsuit he filed in 2009, which was later dropped, against the state department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks over an easement that allowed people to get to a fishing access site near his property.
