WESLACO — Authorities arrested a husband and wife duo Wednesday in connection with an alleged loan fraud scheme dating back to 2011. Juan Antonio Martinez, 41, and his wife Alejandra Reyes Martinez, 37, were arrested on forgery charges at about 2:30 p.m. by Weslaco police and the U.S. Marshal Fugitive Task Force. The arrests were made at the couple’s tax preparation business in the 300 block of East Expressway 83 in Pharr. Charges stem from allegations that, according to court documents, Juan Antonio Martinez in December 2011 forged a McAllen resident’s signature to secure a $25,000 loan from the BBVA Compass bank in Weslaco. The U.S. Small Business Administration referred the McAllen man to the U.S. Department of Treasury as a delinquent borrower and his credit has since been negatively affected as a result of the fraudulent loan, court documents further allege.
