R.I. hires new chief marketing officer in wake of botched tourism campaignPROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Rhode Island Commerce Corporation has hired native Rhode Islander Lara Salamano as its new chief marketing officer, replacing Betsy Wall, who was forced out on April 1 after the state’s botched tourism campaign rollout. Salamano is from Warwick and had recently left her position at media company Pop in New York, where she was vice president for partner marketing, Commerce spokesman Matthew Sheaff said. Sheaff could not immediately say what Salamano’s salary will be, when she left Pop and when she’s starting work in Rhode Island. Salamano is a 1992 graduate of the University of Rhode Island and Toll Gate High School, Sheaff said. Salamano steps into a role where the $5 million budget this year for the state’s tourism and marketing campaign came under fire at the General Assembly because of the botched tourism rollout of the widely criticized and quickly dismissed Cooler & Warmer logo for the state.
